Next Steps
The plans for Turramurra Town Centre were approved by Council at the Extraordinary Meeting of Council on the 27th March 2006. There have been small but significant changes to the plans since that time (details HERE). The current plans can be found by clicking HERE.
There are three major points that Council will have to force through in the coming months in order to realise their "vision" for Turramurra:
- The sale of Council owned Community Land (the open air car park on Turramurra Avenue / Gilroy Lane, and the open air car park on Ray Street / William Street (details HERE);
- The forced relocation of Coles supermarket from Ray Street to an new underground site on Turramurra Avenue (details HERE)
- The design and approval of either the enormous "Community Centre" building or the "Aquatic / Leisure Centre" on the open air car park and Coles area on Ray Street / William Street (Aquatic / Leisure Centre details HERE).
All three of these issues will require Council to seek comment from the general public and present an opportunity for residents to influence and significantly change the plans for Turramurra.
- Currently the Aquatic / Leisure Centre is on Public Exhibition until 30 June (details HERE). We strongly encourage you to read the information on this web site and the study from Council and make a submission.
- Coles has lodged a Development Application with Council on Tuesday 13th June for expansion of their supermarket on their existing site. We expect that the Application will be placed on Public Exhibition shortly. This is particularly good news for the nearly 2000 residents who signed our petition to keep Coles in it's current location. Once the application is placed on public exhibition it will be vital that residents make submissions to Council on this issue. Obviously, Friends of Turramurra would encourage you to support Coles' efforts to remain in their current location, not least because it is likely to force Council to make major revisions to the Turramurra Town Centre plans as the proposed "Community Centre" building or "Aquatic / Leisure Centre" would need to be relocated or removed completely. Hopefully, this will provide an opportunity for residents to press for significant improvements to the Turramurra plan.
- Council will need to hold a public hearing into the sale of Council’s Community land (the two open air car parks) in Turramurra (details HERE). Council will hold a public hearing (date yet to be determined) to seek approval from residents for this land sale, and we strongly encourage you to attend this hearing and oppose this sale of public assets, not least of all because it will prevent the development of buildings in the car park beside Turramurra Uniting Church and the development of "Community Facilities" building or "Aquatic / Leisure Centre" in the Ray Street / William Street car park area.
