Council's Aquatic Feasibility Study has now been released for Public Exhibition (HERE). The proposed facility is much more than just a 25m indoor swimming pool. It has now grown into a multi-storey sports complex with a ground floor area of 5000sqm alone. According to Council's study, the facility is to include:
| An 8-lane 25 metre indoor pool | A 25m indoor program pool |
| Spa | Sauna / steam room |
| Multi-purpose program and drop-in spaces / social areas | Heath / fitness gym / spinning/ aerobics room |
| Crθche | Cafι to serve both venue visitors and the wider community |
| Health suites for sports medicine, physiotherapists | A number of specialist small group / family change facilities |
| Waiting areas for special service groups / clients | Indoor (and possibly, outdoor) aquatic and dry play facilities. |
This is on top of the recommended extensive re-development of West Pymble pool which includes the existing 50m pool, a possible new 25m heated pool, cafes, children's aquatic and dry play facilities, beach volley ball court, multi-purpose community activities room.
The study was received by Council at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on the 9th May. The study examined 17 possible locations for the planned Aquatic / Leisure Centre, with a short list of 5 sites -
|
- Turramurra - William Street / Ray Street car park (in the Coles / library car park area) (click on picture for more details) |
|
| - Turramurra - Turramurra Memorial Oval / Karuah Oval

- St. Ives - St. Ives Village Green
- St. Ives - Cowan Road car park (car park on the corner of Cowan Road and Village Green Parade)
- Killara - Culworth Avenue car park (corner of Culworth Avenue and Lorne Avenue)
At the Council meeting on 23rd May, Crs Ryan, Hall and Lane moved a rescission motion to remove the Killara option from the short list - the motion was won along factional lines reducing the options to the first four sites. At this meeting, Council also resolved to place the study on Public Exhibition for 28 days. The study was placed on exhibition shortly thereafter. The exhibition period ends on 30 June.
Council is now accepting submissions from the public regarding the study. Although there are only 4 nominated preferred options, you are able to comment on any issue regarding the Aquatic / Leisure Centre proposal. This includes preferred locations that are not included in Council's study, or even opposition to having any Aquatic / Leisure Centre in Ku-ring-gai at all - you are NOT limited to only choosing between the 4 nominated options.
Friends of Turramurra is not opposed to the location of an Aquatic / Leisure Centre within Ku-ring-gai (although we are concerned about the construction and on-going costs of such a facility), however we believe that the location on William Street / Ray Street car park has such severe consequences for the future of Turramurra Town Centre that it should not occur. For example:
- the relocation of Coles supermarket to an underground site on Turramurra Ave;
- the increase in traffic and parking issues generated by people from outside Turramurra driving to the Aquatic / Leisure Centre (we do not believe that the majority of people will catch public transport to the pool);
- the transformation of Turramurra into an Aquatic / Leisure Centre for Ku-ring-gai, with some shops for locals.
